Shilpa Rao : Hey can you bring the mike to a higher position, I am a little short
Meiyang Chang : Don’t worry Shilpa, you got a nice bass…
Everyone bursts into a laughter making ‘that’s what she said’ implications and poses. Thus was the story of the sound check when we arrived to have a quick chat with the lady who mesmerized the crowd later on with her band at Hrad Rock Cafe (HRC) Mumbai, none other than the magician herself – singer Shilpa Rao.
She meets us right after her sound check as we bombard her with a few questions, the answers to which the nation needs to know.
So you have been in Mumbai for quite some time now, what do you think of the Mumbai crowd and how much have you performed in Mumbai?
Bombay…it sort of depends…when and where is the gig…specially which day it is…the kind of crowd in Mumbai is
So you get a better crowd on a Saturday night than a Thursday night?
(Laughs…) Yes yes…definitely…!
…and which is your ultimate dream stage to perform on?
The Bandra fort (in Mumbai)…that is like a dream place to perform…the amphitheater there…that would be the ultimate stage.
So what does music and singing mean to you?
That is the only thing I know of, I pretty much can’t do anything else…. (Giggles)
Tell us about your band and how did you all come along?
Basically I met these guys through my brother…..And they are really very talented and they play jazz….And it’s a totally different form of music…so what I sing is a different interpretation of music and for them to hear is a different form of music…So the whole difference is what we are actually going to put up tonight, different perceptions.
And what is the pep talk before the performance or just sound check and ready to go?
Just be yourself…Because you guys are way too good… (Laughs)
Okay Shilpa, what if you were in the middle of an arrange marriage set-up and you had to sing a song to impress the guy, what would you sing?
If it is a arrange marriage set-up I would just run through the door!
So time for some rapid fire questions,
That one song which always plays on your mind?
There is a line by my very good friend Amitabh Verma….”Behad mushruf hum ho phir bhi fursat na kam ho”…which means you really want to make it big or do a great job at what you do but you also want your leisure so you are really talking about the balance in life. (Nice and Deep right? )
That one song you wish you were the singer?
If singing is your 1st love, what would be second?
Food…Anything…Indian food anytime.
So many to choose from…Eagles would be right at the top through…Dirty loops is my current favourite..Indian Band would be Indian Ocean as I listen a lot of them.
So what are your plans for 2014 and what does it have in store for you?
In 2014 I am looking forward to some songs which I have recorded and will be releasing this year…and we are looking to take a tour and take these performances further.
Who knew Shilpa Rao would want to run away from a arrange marriage set-up! Would you do a similar thing while deciding your life partner?
