A man with love for music takes a turn towards an IT company and ends up tickling the funny bone of hundreds. This is how the story of stand up comedian Sanjay Manaktala can be best described. He talks to us about girls, money and more!
The Bangalore based comedian Sanjay Manaktala, lived in California, US before shifting his base to India in 2010 for an IT consulting company and then finally took stand up comedy as a full time job.
The first thought that popped in our heads: was stand up comedy what he always aimed to do?
“No” said Sanjay and added “I was always the funny one but never had the thought to try stand up comedy (as profession). Or maybe I was scared or embarrassed to try, I don’t know. But when I took a 3 month leave from my job I discovered open mics and smaller places to start in California, and from that point on I was hooked”.
Sanjay got together with a group of people in 2011, who shared the same love of comedy as him and called it “The Polished Bottoms”. Now the gang of comedians impresses people with their knack for stand up in shows anywhere that call them. From Corporates, Universities to comedy clubs, they are all very active.
Hasse to phasee, does Sanjay manage to flatter women easily by some smart jokes?
“It’s definitely a conversation starter, that’s for sure. And ladies, while I’ll tell you it doesn’t really hurt, it also isn’t a sure shot. Also now I’m older and there are better looking comics coming up, so my days are numbered “, said Sanjay before quickly adding, “Plus I have a girlfriend (awww!)
A comedian can be stuck in some sticky situations as well. Having written that, we asked him our favourite question. What was his whackiest experience while doing a show?
“(I was) Doing stand up for 200 guys in Andhra Pradesh who didn’t speak English. They were all sales representatives for Micromax or Spice or one of those. So ya, that didn’t go well,”said Sanjay Manaktala.
Having made a name for himself, Sanjay has some pearls of wisdom to give away for those, who want to pursue stand up comedy as their dream profession.
Here’s what he said: “: Stop wasting your time at home thinking about it and take advantage of whatever little shows are happening and get out there,”
“Go help at the club, go shadow other comedians and speak to them, and do it any opportunity you get. We get so many young guys who think it’s easy or they can do 1-2 shows, bring some friends and then their already on their way. It’s far from it.
“Get up as often as you can, and always be humble because right when you think you have it all figured out you’ll meet somebody else who will ground you to the floor. It’s the hardest thing to do but also the funniest,” he added.
Sanjay Manaktala also went on to quote comedy actor Jerry Seinfeld and said:” Seinfeld recently said that ‘you never have to grow up while doing this (like an adult) – although a little silly it’s true. It’s so much fun once you get decent at it and then all you want to do is get better and better’. How many jobs can say that?”
